A two-core dagger with homogenous high-carbon edge.

Pattern welding, commonly know as "Damascus" is a process that involves heat, sweat and skill.  There are numerous bladesmiths today that are unable to master its intricacies and subtleties. The pattern welding process involves an intimate knowledge of forge practice and a great deal of skill in order to get precise, beautiful and breathtaking patterns in the steel.

A properly forged pattern welded blade is a thing of beauty and deadly purpose. Legendary in its ability to cut and "stay together", these blades are the ultimate test of the bladesmith's art.  We are proud to present what have been called the "finest pattern welded blades available today".

Each blade is forged, welded and patterned by hand, and our patterns are precise and exacting. Unlike the so called "Random" patterns offered elsewhere we look at this random pattern as raw material. The place where others leave off we actually consider a starting point!

We are also proud that we can offer traditionally welded "Viking" and Germanic style blades using various two, three and four cored blades in rather complex and striking patterns.  There are a handful of people alive today that are able to make these...and frankly I showed many of them how....

Choice of materials
Choosing the right material combinations is of utmost importance in pattern welding. We choose our material combinations with cutting ability as the first consideration and then contrast/pattern as a secondary element.  Traditionally, this material was made from high carbon and low carbon steels/irons. While this combination makes a very good blade modern alloys open an entirely new aspect to pattern welding.  The use of high nickel/high chrome content steels can produce vibrant and very striking patterns and contrasts without sacrificing any cutting ability.  But the use of these materials require a great deal of skill...much more than the traditional high/low carbon combinations.

Patterns
There are numerous patterns available in this material..We are not limited to the "Random" pattern that so many other are. We pride ourselves in the precise and beautiful patterns that we make. Some of the patterns are, but not limited to:

Turkish Twist

Double Edge
Double Star Twist

This pattern is a variation on the Chevron Twist. This pattern works best on a blade with a deep hollow grind. Has wonderful cutting ability, and will hold an excellent edge.

"Lucifer's Laces"

Another pattern developed by Jim's curiosity. This pattern is very time consuming and requires an extreme amount of craftsmanship to create. Has excellent cutting and edge holding abilities. Has approximately  500+ layers.

Pool and Eye/Wood grain

The Pool and Eye pattern is quite subtle when compared to some of the other patterns, but it can be quite pretty in it's own way.  It cuts very well  and holds a good edge. This pattern has 300 to 360+ layers.

Turkish/ Persian-
Ribbon

This is probably the most beautiful of all the pattern-welded steel patterns. It is very time consuming, uses a tremendous amount of material, and is one of the most difficult to make.  A deep-hollow or flat grind brings the best results. This is perhaps the best cutting of all the patterns. Has approximately 500 to 1100 layers.

Chevron Twist

A very basic pattern that can be quite elegant when done properly.  Has approximately 200 layers and has good to excellent cutting and edge hold abilities.

Straight Laminate

Straight laminate pattern is in terms of construction, one of the simplest patterns, yet it is still the most difficult to master. It is the beginning of all other patterns. Has 350+ layers and has good cutting and edge holding ability.

Maiden's Hair

The Maiden's Hair pattern has wonderful cutting ability, and will hold an excellent edge. It has approximately 160 to 300+ layers. This pattern looks best when flat ground.

"Hugs and Kisses"

A pattern developed by Jim Hrisoulas, it is a variation of the ladder pattern that requires great control. This patterns has very good cutting and edge holding abilities. Works best on a double edge blade, and requires a fuller to bring out its true beauty. Has approximately 300+ layers.

Ladder

The ladder pattern is the classic pattern.  This pattern is one of the better ones for cutting and edge holding ability. Has 200+ layers.

Butterfly

The butterfly pattern is a manipulation of the Ladder pattern and has the same general characteristics.

This blade was made from 1060 and meteoric iron.

Welded Cable

The use of welded cable (AKA wire rope) dates form the latter part of the 19th Cent and results in a patterned blade that resembles spider webs or reptile skin in its appearance.  These blades, while unique and otherwise strange in their looks are still good performers when it comes to cutting ability.  We use only the finest grade XXX Improved Plow share cable as the basis and then we add a small amount of pure nickel into the blade to give it a little more character in the finished piece.
